E95 – Thinking In Bets with Annie Duke

Many of you have heard about the Butterfly Effect, and in simple terms, the butterfly effect is the idea that a small change can cause much larger transformations to happen. This concept is especially important when making life and business decisions since you can think about things in a probabilistic manner, limiting the downside.

Our guest for today is Annie Duke who is an experienced corporate speaker and consultant on the behavior of decision making. In 2018, she released her first book Thinking in Bets: Making Smarter Decisions When You Don’t Have All the Facts which quickly became a national bestseller. Anne is also a former poker player and has won more than $4 million in tournament poker, a World Series of Poker bracelet, the World Series of Poker Tournament of Champions, and the NBC National Poker Heads-Up Championship.

Today we are going to discuss…

  • Why and how people justify bad choices based on results
  • Thinking about our decisions in terms of probabilities
  • Understanding the implications of small sample sizes and why we are wired not to consider sample sizes after the fact
